About the Orchestra
The Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra is a community-based orchestra dedicated to promoting and advancing orchestral music throughout The Bahamas.
The Orchestra brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for musical excellence and a commitment to serving the nation through the performing arts.
Over the years, the Orchestra has performed at national celebrations, community concerts, educational programmes, and special cultural events while providing opportunities for young Bahamian musicians to perform alongside experienced instrumentalists.
As one of the country’s leading orchestral ensembles, the Orchestra continues to celebrate the universal language of music while inspiring future generations of performers and audiences alike.
A Gift to the Orchestra
This website has been gifted to The Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra by His Excellency P. Nicholas J. Symonette Jr., High Commissioner of The Bahamas to the Republic of India, in loving memory of his grandmother, Miriam Symonette.
Among his earliest memories are accompanying his grandmother to Orchestra rehearsals and listening to her practise the violin with dedication and joy. Those experiences instilled in him a lasting appreciation for music, discipline, and the importance of preserving the cultural institutions that enrich a nation.
It is his hope that this website will serve not only as a resource for today’s Orchestra, but also as a permanent digital home that preserves its history, celebrates its musicians, honours those who built it, and inspires future generations of Bahamians to discover the beauty of orchestral music.
The website stands as a tribute to Miriam Symonette’s enduring love of music and to every musician, volunteer, conductor, patron, and supporter whose commitment has shaped the legacy of The Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra.
Our Mission
To promote, preserve, and advance orchestral music throughout The Bahamas by presenting exceptional performances, encouraging musical excellence, supporting music education, and creating opportunities for musicians of all ages to perform, learn, and inspire others.
Our Vision
To be recognized as the premier orchestral institution of The Bahamas and a leading cultural ambassador throughout the Caribbean, inspiring generations through musical excellence, education, and community engagement.
Our History
The Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra was established in 1991 through the vision and dedication of a group of musicians, educators, and supporters of the performing arts who believed that orchestral music should have a permanent place within the cultural life of The Bahamas.
Since its founding, the Orchestra has welcomed musicians from many professions and backgrounds who have generously volunteered their time and talent in service of music and community.
Through regular rehearsals, public concerts, educational performances, and national celebrations, the Orchestra has become an important part of the country’s artistic heritage while providing valuable opportunities for Bahamian musicians to develop their talents and perform before audiences across the nation.
Today, the Orchestra continues to build upon that legacy while preserving its history for future generations.
